Story behind the song
I wrote a whole bunch of songs after 9th Sept 2001. I'm sad that our world has gone paranoid again - I don't miss the cold war one little bit. The song seeks to rise above the paranoia.
Lyrics
Well, I'm living in a cupboard, and I can't get through
The lines are down and I really need to talk with you
Can you tell me to do
'Cos I'm living in a cupboard and the lights are low
I'm expecting salvation, can you tell me please when I'm free to go?
I really need to know
The air has a smell of Uranium
There's a camera in my cranium
When you're living in a cupboard
There's just no room to grow
Well I'm living on a train, 'cos I can't take the pain
I'm moving on again, I just want to get close to you
Don't say we are through
I'm living on a train, lost my ticket again
Now I'm out in the rain, but I never lost sight of you
Don't you know, my feelings are true
The Kokomo hum is rising
There's a B52 coming over the horizon
When you're living on a train
The sky's so big and blue
All I wanted was to settle down in a cottage by the sea...
Now the kids want ferrets and cats and rats
But we're living in a lamppost
And all we're allowed in a broken-down TV...
Well I'm living in a test tube, growing a beak
I just hope my neighbour doesn't turn out to be some kind of freak
'Cos we're living cheek to cheek
We'll I'm living in a test tube, stuck in the mould
My fingers are tiny, I hope I don't die before I'm three weeks old
I'm not very bold
I know my courage will rise again
When I get out of this liquid nitrogen
When you're living in a test tube
You learn to do as you are told
Now I'm living in a song, and it's not very long
But it's broad at the shoulders and it's lonely eye is focused on you
And all that you do
I'm living in your song, and you're never alone
I'm coming back home, I'm so glad I made it through
Maybe you are too
I know the world will all make perfect sense
When we realise were living in a big blue tent
But now were living in a song
And I hope it doesn't take very long...
All I wanted was to settle down in a cottage by the sea...
Now the kids want ferrets and cats and rats
But we're living in a lamppost
And all we're allowed is a broken-down TV...
